GRAND CHUTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The outdoor warning siren located at Mayflower Road and Pennsylvania in Grand Chute has been rendered inoperable.
According to the Grand Chute Fire Department, they were told by the siren’s service contractor that the siren reached the end of its useful life after 25 years. It was planned to be decommissioned anyway based on a plan approved Tuesday by the Town Board.
With the Mayflower siren inoperable, the GCFD wants to ensure residents they are aware it will not go off during severe weather, or during the weekly test held Saturdays at noon during the storm season.
The same plan which would have decommissioned the Mayflower siren also funded the relocation and upgrade of another outdoor siren currently located at Badger Elementary School.
The Badger Elementary siren is being moved to Fire Station Two at 3900 West Spencer Street. The Fire Department says this will maximize the siren’s effectiveness.
Outagamie County recommends residents obtain NOAA weather radios or download a weather phone app to be aware of severe weather alerts. They say it’s important to always have multiple ways of being alerted to severe weather.
