Kaitlynn Ray (Fond du Lac Co. Jail)
FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The suspect in a high-speed chase which ended in downtown Fond du Lac pleaded not guilty Friday.
Kaitlynn Ray, 19, also waived her preliminary hearing on 25 counts, including recklessly endangering safety, and operating while intoxicated causing injury. She returns to court Ag. 29 for a possible plea hearing, court records show.
The sheriff’s office says the May 30 chase began when a deputy clocked Ray driving 53 mph in a 30 mph zone. Prosecutors say Ray drove recklessly through the city’s downtown, at some points reaching 80 mph.
“Deputies faced a very difficult decision, knowing that regardless of what they did, this suspect was highly likely to crash as she entered the heart of downtown: continue to pursue and attempt to give traffic and pedestrians a warning to get out of the way of the speeding suspect, or let the suspect travel through the heart of downtown over 80 mph unpursued and with no warning to the public,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a Facebook post.
“The sergeant ordered termination of the pursuit, but seconds later the suspect crashed into a total of eight vehicles, injuring five people.”
