GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — This upcoming school year might be the last year high school students in the Green Bay Area Public School District are expected to be in class at 7:30 a.m.
For the past 18 months, GBAPS has been studying the top 200 best performing high schools across the country in an effort to enhance student success outcomes.
They found that later start times lead to increased student attendance and success. The district has not yet officially decided how much later, if later at all, the day would start, but there are two options being considered. Scenario A would see the day run from 8:10 a.m. until 3:40 p.m. and Scenario B would have students in class from 8:30 p.m. until 4 p.m.
But would a later start time mean getting out of school later, too?
“There are some ways to take advantage of and repurpose our time; It doesn’t necessarily mean we will be going late into the afternoon,” said GBAPS Associate Superintendent David Johns. “There are some ways we can shorten our lunch periods and how many transition periods our kids have in the day.”
Johns says the district may also have fewer classes in a day so they can have longer class periods.
The school board could make a decision on the start time in September.
