FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A taser was used to get a Green Bay man suspected of his 9th OWI into custody after a pursuit in Fond du Lac County.
Around 4:52 a.m. Thursday, the Fond du Lac Communications Center was told the Wisconsin State Patrol was pursuing a reckless driver that was reported in Winnebago County southbound on I-41.
The trooper ultimately terminated the pursuit, but continued to follow the suspect vehicle into Fond du Lac County as it was driving at normal highway speeds.
A Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputy located the suspect vehicle near I-41 southbound near Military Road, knowing it was the vehicle that recently fled State Patrol.
The driving behavior was consistent with that of a potential impaired driver and the deputy attempted to stop the vehicle.
The vehicle didn’t stop after the Deputy’s emergency light and siren went on and a pursuit was initiated by the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office.
The vehicle exited at Military Avenue and turned southbound, then continued back northbound on Rolling Meadows Drive.
A Sergeant of the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s attempted a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) maneuver at Pioneer Road and Johnson Street.
Squad cars then positioned to box in the suspect vehicle, bringing the pursuit to an end.
The driver and lone occupant was not compliant with commands when he exited the vehicle. A Deputy with the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office deployed his Electric Control Device (Taser), which was successful. The driver was taken into custody without further incident.
An Operating While Impaired (OWI) investigation was conducted and the driver was found to be under the influence of alcohol. It was discovered that the driver had eight prior OWI’s.
The driver is a 59-year-old Green Bay man being held at the Fond du Lac County Jail on Felony Fleeing/Eluding a Law Enforcement Officer, as well as suspicion of Operating While Impaired (OWI), 9th Offense.
The pursuit covered a distance of approximately 2.7 miles. Two sheriff’s squads sustained damage during the pursuit.
