Police speak out about video of man’s arrest at Bay Beach; confirm ‘Cops’ show was filming

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Green Bay Police Department is speaking out about a recent arrest that has garnered immense attention on social media.

GBPD says John Alexander, 38, was taken into custody June 12 at Bay Beach Amusement Park.

Bystanders recorded the arrest and posted videos online, accumulating thousands of views, shares and comments. The videos show a Black man on the ground next to the Ferris wheel, with several white police officers holding him down.

A professional camera crew can also be seen recording the arrest. GBPD confirmed in a news release Monday the popular reality TV shows “Cops” was filming.

According to authorities, Alexander was arrested “following the report of a suspicious person who allegedly made uncomfortable comments to a park employee and caused fear.”

During the encounter, officers determined a need to arrest. The suspect subsequently resisted, and force was used to take him into custody.

Alexander was charged June 13 with disorderly conduct and resisting an officer. Online court records show a $5,000 signature bond was paid and he was released that same day.

GBPD says all use of force is reviewed for policy compliance.
