DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Residents of a De Pere apartment building had to evacuate Sunday night after the building was struck by lightning.
Just before 7 p.m. Sunday, crews were dispatched to 2109 Ryan Road for a report of a structure fire.
Crews learned that the building was struck by lightning and firefighters could smell electrical burning but found no smoke or fire.
Some residents self evacuated from their apartment while firefighters had to ask the remainder of residents to leave.
Power was still on to the structure and was turned off to the complex while investigation continued for the source of the burning smell.
Crews found a hole in the roof where the lightning had struck the building but no fire or smoke was found.
The electricity to the building will remain off until property management could contact an electrician.
All estimated 24 occupants of the 12-unit apartment building will be displaced from the complex until an electrician can verify the damage.
De Pere Fire Rescue is also adding that when smoke alarms are activated, everyone should evacuate the building.
