HOWARD, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The village of Howard unanimously passed an ordinance Monday night to prohibit feeding wildlife.
The hope is the ordinance will help control the village’s deer population. It bans people from placing food on their property for wildlife, and also applies to parks in the village.
The ban comes after months of complaints from residents about a growing number of deer in yards and neighborhoods.
One trustee says she believes this will help the health of the community.
“I had a lady call me that had lost seven dogs before the vet found a tick on the eighth dog. They were able to save the eighth dog. Ticks, it doesn’t really matter with ticks, they are horrible. They are on the deer. That’s it,” said Howard Village Trustee Cathy Hughes.
Anyone who violates the ordinance would have to pay a fine between $500 and $1,000.
