ALGOMA (WTAQ-WLUK) — Improvements have resumed at a popular destination along the Lakeshore.
The crew from Roen Salvage Co. marked the first week of work at the Algoma Harbor breakwall. Project superintendent Alex Kirkegaard says the 1,500-foot-long barrier was in bad shape.
“There was a lot of broken concrete and rebar showing, and some undermining going on underneath it, and it wasn’t doing its job anymore. So we demolished the top of that and we installed sheet piling all the way around it. We’re going to be doing a new concrete cap on the top of it, so the wall is going to be slightly taller and wider,” said Kirkegaard.
City leaders say the $15 million project is ahead of schedule and could be completed later in the summer. Algoma City Administrator Matt Murphy says work on a second $15 million dollar project, the north breakwall, could begin after that.
“We’re going to try to work with whoever has that contract, to get our lighthouse painted at the same time, which needs to be done,” said Murphy.
Murphy says the familiar catwalk to the red lighthouse will be removed.
“I know some people in the community here are disappointed that it’s coming down, because it is very picturesque. It does look really nice in photos. They’re looking to raise some money to try to get the catwalk completely all the way back out to the lighthouse like it does currently today,” he said.
Back on the south break wall, Kirkegaard says prep work here should wrap up in the coming days.
“We’re hoping to start concrete placement. It’ll take a few months to complete, but we’re hoping to start that. I would like to start hopefully the end of next week, or the week after,” he said.
As work continues at the Algoma Harbor, boaters are asked to be mindful, go slow and create no-wake while traveling near the project area.
