GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A woman is in custody after a welfare check in downtown Green Bay in which a gas leak may have been started intentionally.
According to Captain Andy Opperman with the Green Bay Police Department, the incident began around 7 p.m. Tuesday, when officers were dispatched for a welfare check in the 600 block of Pine Street.
Opperman said the welfare check was for a 36-year-old female “who was yelling and looking like they were going to jump out the window or the door of the residence.”
Witnesses reported the woman was also throwing items from an apartment window.
GBPD’s SWAT and Crisis Negotiation Team, along with other officers, arrived on scene and began negotiating with the woman. After she repeatedly refused to leave the residence, law enforcement eventually deployed gas to force her to exit.
The woman was taken into custody around 8:30 p.m. and Opperman says she will be going to jail. Authorities say it is believed a gas leak may have been intentionally started during the welfare check.
“It was eventually identified that there was a possible gas leak cause, whether that was by turning on the stove or cutting a gas line,” Opperman said. “We do believe that based off of witness statements and carbon monoxide sensors going off that there was gas.”
Opperman would not confirm if the woman was arrested due to starting a gas leak. He had no comment about whether weapons were inside the residence or if the woman has a previous criminal history.
Because the carbon monoxide detectors were activated, Wisconsin Public Service temporarily shut off gas to the building and its tenants were evacuated.
During the incident, Pine Street was closed from S. Quincy Street to N. Monroe Avenue. All streets have since reopened.
