TOWNSEND, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — An injury to a firefighter in northern Oconto County is a reminder of the risk as Wisconsin experiences elevated fire danger this week.
The Townsend Fire Department says a firefighter sustained minor injuries while fighting a fire in grass and woods in the area of 18904 Highway 32 on Monday.
The fire burned about one acre of land.
On Tuesday, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced that the state is experiencing elevated fire danger all week. That danger will continue until the is significant rainfall.
Local meteorologists are not forecasting any rain until Saturday, when there is a chance for isolated showers.
The DNR’s fire danger map as of Tuesday shows much of northern and central Wisconsin in either “high” or “very high” danger. In the Green Bay, Fox Valley and Lakeshore regions, the danger is listed as “moderate.”
Burn permits remain suspended in 30 counties where the DNR has burn restriction authority.
The DNR recommends taking these steps to avoid fires getting out of control:
- Avoid outdoor burning until conditions improve.
- Operate equipment (chainsaws, off-road vehicles, lawnmowers, etc.) early in the morning or late in the day to avoid sparks at peak burn hours.
- Secure dragging trailer chains.
- Report fires early and call 911.
