GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — After the Green Bay Packers made their eighth and final pick of the NFL Draft on Saturday at Lambeau Field, head coach Matt LaFleur made his way to the post-draft press conference and said he was impressed with the way the three-day draft played out for the first time in Green Bay.
“I can’t imagine a better NFL Draft than the one we hosted here,” he said.
The first NFL Draft in Green Bay was impressive, and LaFleur hopes he can say something similar about the eight new players the team added to the roster.
Four offensive players were drafted, including the first three picks, and four defensive players were added.
Furthermore, Green Bay selected at least one player in each of the perceived positions of need: wide receiver (two), defensive line (three) and one cornerback. The Packers also added two more offensive lineman as they try to build depth up front.
Although the Packers drafted a cornerback — it came in the seventh round — Micah Robinson of Tulane. He’s not a replacement for starter Jaire Alexander, who the Packers likely wouldn’t mind moving on from since he’s been more injured than healthy in recent seasons.
Alexander, who participated in this week’s virtual offseason program, has played seven or fewer games in three of the last four seasons, and with a $24,636,355 cap hit this season it seems the best move for Green Bay is to move on. However, Alexander is still on the roster and after Saturday’s draft concluded. GM Brian Gutekunst offered no clarity on if the cornerback will be traded this offseason.
“No real updates on that,” he said. “He’s on our roster now, and that’s how we’ll proceed. We’ll figure it out as we go along.”
As for the draft, Gutekunst liked what was added to the roster.
“We had a pretty good day today and I’m excited about these guys,” he said. “We increased the competition in a lot of spots. The draft’s not always going to fall the way you think it’s gong to fall.”
