GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Wide receiver Matthew Golden is the first wide receiver picked by the Green Bay Packers in the first round of the NFL Draft since 2002.
Fans believe Golden comes to Green Bay at an opportune time. Mike Joho said he was just the pick some were hoping for.
“We’re watching the picks go by, and there was still that wide receiver who was still there, and we’re all crossing our fingers,” Joho said. “I got a text from my son in Nevada, said it’s going to be Golden! And I said I hope so, and sure enough it was. It was great! I thought they would go with the cornerback.”
Golden is a pick that Joho thinks will help the Packers’ offense make bigger plays.
“Having a speed guy, I think it’s really going to open up the offense with the nice tight ends that we have. Very excited about it,” he said.
Though Golden was the team’s number one pick, some fans, like Ethan Schauf, had to go back and find out why.
“I watched Matthew Golden’s highlight reel this morning,” Schauf said. “Dude’s got good hands, good speed, positions himself really well. I’m also really excited to see, he seems like a humble guy, might be a good locker room addition for us.”
Russ VanLanen said the pick is a “golden” opportunity.
“I was just saying, we got another golden boy! So, we’re looking forward to that. It was a great pick. I think good things are going to happen.”
As for the second round pick? Packers fanatics are looking for some defense.
“Well, edge rusher would be nice. Maybe some cornerback or so,” VanLanen said.
Joho echoed that.
“I kind of hope [Jaire] Alexander’s back next year. They restructure his contract and they get a cornerback, but can’t go wrong with a defensive tackle or an edge rusher,” he said.
