APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Philanthropist Mary Beth Nienhaus is offering to match up to $400,000 in donations toward a senior citizens’ center.
The match offer comes as the Thompson Center on Lourdes is trying to raise $6.5 million to be converted into the Mary Beth Nienhaus Activity Center.
Organizers say they are 75% of the way toward their goal.
The center, expected to open in June, will include pickleball courts, wellness and fitness areas, classrooms equipped with technology and gathering areas. It will be located at 3000 E. College Ave., in a former grocery store building that most recently was a temporary location for the Appleton Public Library.
The Thompson Center on Lourdes says donations are tax-deductible and can be pledged over the course of three years. Donors who give at least $1,000 will be honored on a permanent donor wall in the new center.
