WAUPUN, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A Waupun Correctional Institution inmate was airlifted to the hospital Tuesday.
The Wisconsin Department of Corrections says the 44-year-old man jumped from one of the tiers in the cell hall around 11 a.m. Prison staff members immediately gave the man first aid. He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and from there flown to another medical facility.
The DOC did not release information on the man’s condition, citing federal privacy rules.
Seven inmates have died at Waupun since 2023. Last year, the former warden and eight staff members were charged in connection with four of the deaths. Charges against one of the staff members have been dropped.
