(ST. NORBERT COMMUNICATIONS) DE PERE – St. Norbert College earned a split at home against Lakeland University, coming back from a three-run deficit in the first game with a 9-6 victory in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Miron Construction Field.
The Green Knights (6-22, 5-7 NACC) fought back after trailing in the second game of the afternoon, tying the game at 8-8 in the eighth inning before the Muskies scored the winning run in the ninth to win 9-8.
After trailing 1-0 in the third inning, the Green Knights scored three in response to take their first lead of the day. An Ava Engwall single brought home Zoe Zasada following an error from the Muskies outfield. Engwall scored on a wild pitch to take the lead, while a Morgan Hansel RBI double brought home another run. The Muskies took a 6-3 lead in the fourth, but St. Norbert didn’t lie low for long, as they regained the lead in the bottom of the inning. A double from Engwall and a single from Addison Race each brought home two runs as the Green Knights took back a 7-6 lead.
Engwall finished the day with a home run in the sixth, leading the Green Knights to a 9-6 victory.
Engwall had three hits, while Allison Ardito and Race each had two. Amber Johanek (pictured) took the win, pitching 3 2/3 innings and allowing just one hit with one strikeout and two walks.
Trailing 3-0 in the second game of the afternoon, Ardito got the Green Knights on the board in the third with a solo home run. A Race RBI single tied the game at 3-3 while a Grendal Sprong single gave the Green Knights a 4-3 lead.
The Muskies regained a 7-4 lead in the fourth inning, but a second home run from Ardito made it a 7-6 ballgame. The Green Knights tied the game at 8-8 off a Engwall RBI single, but it was Lakeland who found the crucial run for the win, scoring a home run in the seventh to take a 9-8 win.
Ardito and Engwall both had three hits. Bailie Thielen took the loss, pitching one inning and allowing one run.
Saturday
LISLE, Ill. – St. Norbert College couldn’t keep up with Benedictine University in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader, falling by scores of 5-0 and 10-2 at Weidkamp Field.
The Green Knights (5-21, 4-6 NACC) struggled in the first game of the afternoon, only being able to produce one hit from Ava Engwall (pictured). The Eagles scored four of their five runs in the opening three innings and added a cushion in the sixth with one more run. Bailie Thielen took the loss, pitching six innings and striking out one.
St. Norbert got off to a better start in the second game, taking a 1-0 lead thanks to a Benedictine error in the first inning. A Grendel Sprong double made it 2-1 in the third to score Engwall, but a grand slam from the Eagles turned the game on its head as Benedictine moved to a 10-2 win for the sweep.
Engwall recorded three hits, going 3-of-3 and scoring both St. Norbert runs. Addison Race recorded two hits.
Addison Maurer took the loss, pitching two innings and allowing three hits and five runs with one strikeout and three walks.
