GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — All residents and pets at a residence on Green Bay’s east side are safe following a fire Tuesday afternoon.
Crews were dispatched to 223 S. Irwin Avenue around 1:30 p.m. for reports of smoke and flames in the home’s basement. Occupants and a dog self-evacuated prior to GBMFD’s arrival.
Firefighters on scene discovered “flames exiting a basement window and extending to the exterior of the home.” Officials say the residence was “fully charged” with smoke and crews suspected the fire was traveling the walls to the attic.
“Personnel worked diligently to identify chase ways using thermal imaging cameras. Fire was extinguished in the walls and attic before extensive damage occurred,” a news release from the Green Bay Metro Fire Department states.
Thanks to the quick and diligent action of firefighters, the home and its contents, along with a pet lizard, were saved.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
