DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — It bills itself as Northeast Wisconsin’s largest volunteer trash pick up event.
The Fox-Wolf Watershed Alliance Cleanup day is quickly approaching, and a preseason effort ties in with the NFL Draft as well.
At Voyageur Park in De Pere, Chelsea Bishop patrols this section of the Fox River shoreline looking for dangerous trash.
“Glass, fishing lures. Lures that are sharp. Fishing line. I actually just found a knife in the parking lot. So yeah. there’s a lot of stuff,” said Chelsea Bishop, Sobieski.
“There’s no shortage of oddities we that we come across every year, when we do this cleanup,” said Dan Beckwith, Fox-Wolf Watershed Alliance Communications Specialist.
Dan Beckwith says volunteers are able to sign up online.
“They’ll get all the equipment that they’ll need. Gloves, pickers, bags, everything. We just set you loose in your location to go pick up trash and litter, and stopping it from reaching our waterways,” he said.
With many people planning to visit the Green Bay area for the upcoming NFL Draft, watershed alliance officials say they have an event designed to tie-in as well.
“On April 22nd, Earth Day, we’re hosting a mini-cleanup in preparation for the main watershed cleanup. We’ll be walking down the east side of the Fox River Trail, and picking up trash, with a lot of dedicated community members who just love to be part of the draft,” said Beckwith.
Meanwhile, Chelsea Bishop continues to scan the shoreline. The official Cleanup Day is May 3, and kicks off at 9 a.m.
“I would definitely be here. I think it’s amazing that people are getting out here, cleaning up the parks, so that more people can enjoy it, in a safer way,” she said.
