ALLOUEZ, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — With less than a week to go until the spring election, the race for a seat on Wisconsin’s Supreme Court is heating up.
Democratic-backed Judge Susan Crawford campaigned in Hudson and Superior Wednesday, while Republican-backed Judge Brad Schimel and former Republican Governor Scott Walker made a stop in Northeast Wisconsin.
Schimel talked with supporters at the Village Grille in Allouez. He said the Crawford campaign and her Democratic supporters are politicizing the race.
“They fail at the ballot box when it’s a legislative race. They can’t get their policies through, so now their focus is if you get the courts, now you can get the laws you want made by the courts, and that’s wrong,” Schimel said.
Walker was on hand to offer his support for Schimel. He believes Schimel will uphold Wisconsin’s constitution and laws.
“Unfortunately, Susan Crawford and her allies are trying to come in here and make this a political battle. My hope is the people of this state will cast a ballot, whether they’re conservative or liberal or somewhere in between, for Brad Schimel,” Walker said.
While Walker and Schimel met with supporters, protesters lined up near the event to express their frustration with Schimel and Elon Musk’s involvement in the Wisconsin Supreme Court race.
“Richest man in the world. He could care less about social security — he’ll never collect it or doesn’t need it. And all that pouring money into these races, that’s just gonna benefit him and [he] doesn’t care about the rest of us,” protester David Schultz said.
According to the Brennan Center for Justice, more than $17 million has gone to the Schimel campaign from groups funded by Musk. Billionaire George Soros and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker have given money to the state Democratic party in support of Crawford.
A Crawford campaign spokesperson provided this statement on Schimel’s event in Allouez:
In the final days of the race, Brad Schimel’s campaign is flailing as his record of letting rape kits sit untested and giving corrupt plea deals to child predators catches up to him. Schimel has no record to run on and Wisconsin voters don’t want a Musk lackey on the Supreme Court. On Tuesday, Wisconsinites will reject corrupt Brad Schimel once again.
In a previously recorded interview with CNN, Crawford addressed the massive spending from both sides in this race.
“I think that the largest contribution that has been received on my side of the table — and these are contributions made to the Wisconsin Democratic Party — is a million dollars, tops. So it’s just dwarfed by what Elon Musk is doing. He’s really kind of taken over the campaign of Brad Schimel,” Crawford said.
On Thursday, Crawford will be in Appleton, among several other cities. Her campaign says from March 22 to March 31, she will have traveled more than 2,400 miles to visit 21 counties across the state — including Winnebago, Brown, Outagamie and Sheboygan counties.
