LITTLE CHUTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The cause of death of nearly 100 ducks found dead at a Little Chute pond was not bird flu, according to the DNR.
The dead birds were found last month at Buchanan Pond, located at the northwest corner of Highway OO and Buchanan Street.
“The ducks tested from Little Chute were negative for avian influenza viruses (including H5N1). The cause of death was aspergillosis, which is a fungal infection. Wild birds become infected by breathing in fungal spores from areas such as agricultural fields covered with moldy waste grain in fall or early winter,” a DNR statement said.
The village originally speculated the birds’ deaths were associated with Avian Influenza A (H5N1).
The birds were removed from the scene and buried in a landfill.
