GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The longest-tenured member of Green Bay’s city council is resigning.
Ald. Chris Wery says he will announce his resignation to the council at its meeting Tuesday night.
Wery has served his west-side district for 21 of the past 23 years.
He says he’s most proud of helping fundraise for the Resch Aquatic Center and to keep Colburn Pool.
In 2016, the city’s ethics board ruled Wery violated ethics policy when he used his temporary bank job to look at his challenger’s bank account.
Wery says he is moving out of his district to a home where he can take better care of his mother and wife, who have both been dealing with health issues.
“I had to decide keep being an alderman or take your mom and find a different place to live,” said Wery. “While that sounds like an easy decision, and it is… I’m also giving up something I’ve loved more than anything I’ve ever done. Easily, hands down. I’m passionate. I love helping people, love getting to the bottom of things, asking tough questions, being a little bit abrupt.”
Wery’s last day will be May 6.
He says people interested in serving out his term will be able to apply and the city council will vote on a replacement.
