GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Two months after the Packers Heritage Trail monument was removed from its downtown Green Bay location, a lawsuit which had tried to stop its removal was finally dismissed Thursday.
The Packers Heritage Plaza featured the statues of Paul Hornung, Johnny “Blood” (McNally), Bart Starr and team co-founder George Whitney Calhoun, among others. The Plaza also included a large recognition wall and green space enhancements. It opened in 2013.
After the city approved plans for an eight-story, 268-unit luxury apartment complex for the parking lot at Cherry and Adams Street, it insisted the Plaza be removed. The group which installed it, Packers Heritage Trail, Inc., sued, seeking to keep it there. The non-profit group and the Green Bay Packers acquiesced, submitting a letter to the court in October, and the plaza was removed late last year.
In October, the parties said they had a resolution to the lawsuit aspect, but the case remained open. Two weeks ago, Green Bay filed a motion asking for the lawsuit to be dismissed.
However, no action was taken, as the following order was signed Friday by Judge Tammy Jo Hock: “Based upon the foregoing stipulation of the parties, IT IS HEREBY ORDERED: That the above-captioned action and all the claims made therein, be and hereby is dismissed, with prejudice and without costs or fees to any party.”
As for the monument itself, it remains in storage. A team spokesperson says specific plans for its future and a new site have yet to be determined.
