GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Like at the grocery store, you may soon be paying more for your eggs at the diner.
Theresa Barlament, owner of the Pancake Place in Green Bay said, “The big question is, what are you paying per dozen this week? That is the big question, and it has been going up every week.”
Amid the biggest bird flu outbreak in a decade, the U.S. has seen a dramatic increase in the price of eggs.
Tuesday, the Waffle House restaurant chain announced it will implement a 50 cent per egg surcharge.
“That may be something that we have to implement going forward. At this point, I am not ready to do that. But if the price continues to go up we are going to have to,” said Barlament.
It’s something they may have to do to protect it’s bottom line.
Barlament added, “My staff will come in and if we are not as busy as I feel, I have been asking any volunteers to leave early to cut back on payroll to kind off offset that food cost.”
Community members say they understand the need to adjust menu prices.
“I would still buy it, and I would never cut back on the tip or anything like that. It is not the servers fault. It’s nobodies fault. It is just the price of living,” said diner regular John Murphy. “All of your food organizations are going to have to adjust cost until they see the prices come down. The honest ones may lower their prices if the egg prices come down, but otherwise if your customers are comfortable with it, they will just leave it at that cost,” says Murphy.
