DOOR COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Plans are underway to help develop a network of multi-use pathways in Northeast Wisconsin.
The newly-formed non-profit group called Door County Trails is behind the effort.
Being an avid bicyclist, Tom Poehlman says taking to the roads sometimes may be a challenge.
“From Sturgeon Bay to Egg Harbor you can take Bay Shore Road. But that has traffic that moves fairly quick, but not a lot of traffic. Then once you’re in Egg Harbor, it’s all zig-zagging through farmland, and trying to get up to Egg Harbor, would be a little bit difficult,” said Tom Poehlman, Sturgeon Bay.
“We are on a mission to get people out of their cars, and onto their bikes, and onto their feet in Door County,” said Craig Charles, Door County Trails Communications Team Chairman.
Craig Charles says the group Door County Trails is there to help.
“We’re not physically building the trails, we’re helping the towns, the villages, and the municipalities to build the trails. So we’re providing planning assistance. We’re providing expertise,” he said.
About a dozen people attended a public information session Thursday morning in Carlsville. Charles says with 19 different municipalities, and numerous other interested groups, working together is key.
“Trails are transportation. So we’re not building recreational trails, we’re building transportation trails. So we’re linking the communities. Primarily will be off-road biking-hiking trails. So when we can, we’re going to be completely off-road, and when we can’t, we’ll try to separate the trail as much as we can in a safe fashion,” he said.
And while the plans are in the early stages, Tom Poehlman says the system is a step in a safe direction.
“Anytime there’s more trails, I think it helps obviously, if it’s especially a multi-use trail. It’ll help connect cyclists, everything,” he said.
Door County Trails meet-and-greets continue on Friday and on Saturday.
