(WTAQ-WLUK) — Winnebago County sirens are fixed after emergency management says they were incorrectly activated over the weekend.
Emergency management says residents may have noticed a different type of sound coming from the sirens Saturday.
It was the “Attack” function.
Officials say the “Attack” function of the Winnebago County siren system would normally never be used.
The siren vendor was able to determine the problem that caused the false activation and provided a solution to ensure it will not happen again.
Officials say there are other warning systems that would be used during an “attack” type incident that are practiced regularly and are understood by the masses.
They add attack siren notifications are not common today; similar to fall out shelters that were practiced and maintained more during the Cold War era.
