(WTAQ-WLUK) — The Oneida Nation is affirming its nonpartisan stance while also addressing tribal members’ concerns about newly enacted policies from the White House.
A statement written by Chairman Tehassi Hill was shared to the tribe’s Facebook page Friday.
Without mentioning President Donald Trump by name, Hill alluded to “a new U.S. administration” as he emphasized the tribe’s commitment to sovereignty and honor in intergovernmental relations.
Hill stressed that the Oneida Nation has always fostered strong partnerships with allies from both political parties and is working to “assess the impacts of the slew of executive orders signed this week.”
The post says the Oneida Nation is “prepared to use our leverage, when necessary, to protect our government, our resources and our people.”
You can read the full statement from Chairman Hill below:
Oneida Nation stands with all sovereign governments in protection of our sovereignty and seeking truth and honor in our intergovernmental relations. As we embark on relations with a new U.S. administration the nation will continue to move forward in a conscientious and deliberate manner, and will be mindful to base our actions and decisions on the facts presented to us.
For decades, Oneida Nation has taken a nonpartisan approach in elections at every level. This provides us the ability to encourage good relations within all political parties. The Nation has worked hard to gain political allies in both Democratic and Republican houses and we will continue to foster those relationships, as well as build new ones.
The Oneida Business Committee has been aware that many of our citizens are concerned with the impacts of newly enacted policies from the White House. We are committed to keeping a pulse on the impacts of these decisions, and are prepared to use our leverage, when necessary, to protect our government, our resources and our people.
As we work to assess the impacts of the slew of executive orders signed this week, be assured that the Oneida Business Committee is committed to exploring all avenues to base our decisions on facts and provide resources where they are most needed.
We encourage you to be careful and to educate yourself to the facts. The Oneida Business Committee took an oath to serve and protect and we hold that responsibility in the highest regards.
Now is the time to be careful in our actions and reactions.
WITH A GOOD MIND, A GOOD HEART AND A STRONG FIRE.
