Gustavo and Alejandro Cantu (GBPD)
GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Two brothers will stand trial together next month for a 2022 murder on Green Bay’s west side, a judge ruled Monday.
Gustavo Cantu, Alejandro Cantu and Jacob Ventura are each charged with being party to the crime of first-degree intentional homicide for the shooting death of Randall Denny at Perkins and Western avenues on April 30, 2022. Police have said the murder appeared to be tied a drug deal, with prosecutors adding that a theft by Denny – including money, drugs, and weapons – was a motivating factor.
At one point, the three were going to stand trial together. However, Ventura gave a statement pointing to Gustavo Cantu as the shooter. As a result, Ventura was already scheduled to stand trial separately, with the Cantus scheduled to stand trial together Feb. 10.
Alejandro Cantu’s attorney Monday asked that the two brothers to stand trial separately. Gustavo Cantu’s attorney joined in the request, while prosecutors contended the cases could be tried together.
Judge Thomas Walsh said there may be antagonistic defenses by the two Cantus to some point, but not to the extent that a jury wouldn’t be able to sort out the testimony.
A three-week trial is planned.
No trial date has been set for Ventura. He returns to court March 10.
