BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Even on a windy day in January, you can find people walking, running, and biking the nearly 14 mile long Fox River Trail.
“We’ll go over and use the trail and just go down to Voyageur Park just to hang out and hear a concert,” said Peter Flucke.
The trail opened in 2001, and the Brown County Parks Department is eyeing to make improvements to help keep it in good shape for years to come.
Among the proposed improvements– paving the trail from Lasee Road in the town of Rockland, all the way to Greenleaf.
Some funding would come from the nonprofit group, Friends of the Fox River Trail, headed up by Tracy Flucke.
“A lot of people use it and is very busy on the northern piece. So, we want to entice people to stretch their wings and go further south. Go down to Greenleaf, go check out that area,” said Tracy Flucke, President of the Friends of the Fox River.
Tracy Flucke says some re-pavement work will be underway this year from Porlier St. in Green Bay to Heritage Rd. in De Pere.
“We just want to make sure that it’s in good shape, that everyone can use it and have a great time when they’re out there,” said Flucke.
Another idea the county has is looking into where additional lighting might be needed.
Businesses, like Cycling Brews in De Pere, see the benefits of being so close to the Fox River trail.
“There’ll be some days, especially on Sunday’s where our bike rack outside will be completely full and the parking lot will be empty and we’ll have mostly bikers here on a good day,” said Josh Smits, Co-Owner of Cycling Brews. “It’s just a great trail, being along the river,” Smits added.
Those in the community are encouraged to see Brown County looking at further investing in what’s a valued resource for the roughly 200,000 who utilize the trail each year.
