(WTAQ-WLUK) — Two highways that run through Northeast Wisconsin are named in a survey identifying the “most-feared road to drive in winter” in the U.S.
According to the survey of 3,000 drivers by Florida car dealer Gunther VW Daytona, Highway 29 is the fourth-most-feared in the state, and number 96 in the nation.
According to survey authors:
Connecting Green Bay to the western regions of Wisconsin, WI-29 sees a mix of urban and rural traffic. Winter storms can lead to dangerous driving conditions, with snow and ice contributing to accidents.
Coming in fifth in Wisconsin and 116th in the nation is Highway 41 — much of which shares its route with Interstate 41.
US-41 runs through eastern Wisconsin, connecting cities like Green Bay and Milwaukee. Winter weather can lead to slick roads and reduced visibility, increasing the risk of accidents. The highway has been associated with multiple-vehicle collisions during winter months.
Wisconsin’s most-feared highway is Highway 35 along the Mississippi River. It is ranked 13th in the U.S. Highway 2 in far northern Wisconsin is second in the state and 52nd in the country. I-94, which runs through Milwaukee and Madison, is third in Wisconsin and 83rd in the U.S.
Alaska takes two of the top three spots in the survey, with the Alcan Highway (Route 2) stretching from Dawson Creek, British Columbia, to Delta Junction, Alaska, coming in at number one. The Seward Highway (Route 9), connecting Anchorage and Seward, comes in at number three.
The second-most-feared winter road in the U.S. is I-90, which runs across the state of New York, including the snow-prone areas around Lake Erie.
