MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Police are still investigating why a 15-year-old student opened fire at a school in Madison last month, the the chief said in a video released Thursday.
“I wish I could stand here today with all the answers to your questions, but that’s not where we are at this point in the investigation,” Police Chief Shon Barnes said in the nearly six-minute video posted on the city’s website.
“While the motive in this case is still unknown, we have no credible information that there are others who intend to commit further violence.”
Investigators have identified Natalie Rupnow as the shooter at Abundant Life Christian School on Dec. 16. Rupnow killed Rubi Patricia Vergara, a 14-year-old freshman, and 42-year-old teacher Erin Michelle West and severely injured two other students before shooting herself.
“We’ve collected two firearms at the scene, but believe only one was used,” Barnes said in the video. “Twenty-one shell casings were recovered at the scene. Still, at this time, we will not be naming where these firearms were purchased.”
Barnes also said Rupnow was active on social media, and that Madison detectives have been applying for search warrants and subpoenas of tech and social media companies as they continue their investigation.
