HOWARD, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Wildlife officials say preliminary results from samples taken from dead geese in Duck Creek Quarry are consistent with bird flu.
The results will be confirmed by the National Veterinary Service Lab (NVSL) within the next month as they process a high volume of samples nationwide.
Bird flu, also known as avian flu, is spreading rapidly nationwide and infiltrating other animal populations.
Tests were taken last month after more than a dozen geese were found dead in the Howard quarry.
The Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary in Green Bay is also taking precautions. Until further notice, the sanctuary will not be selling corn and allowing public to walk around the Raptor Trail. Visitors are also asked not to bring their own corn.
And in western Wisconsin, Barron County recorded its first human bird flu case.
