WAUSHARA COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Nordic Mountain in Waushara County is buzzing with activity.
It is one of the busiest weeks of the year for them.
A fresh coat of snow is on the ground. Lisa Johnson is getting ready to go.
“This is our Christmas gift to ourselves. I just got some new skis and some new boots, and we’re going to try it out,” said Johnson, from Oshkosh.
Her brother, Klint Johnson, is there to help.
“I’ve been skiing probably about 15 years since I came out here. The first time I ever skied was here in middle school for ski club. And ever since coming out here, I kind of just fell in love with it,” said Klint, also of Oshkosh.
“We have 16 runs total. They’re pretty spread out over the whole hill. There’s a pretty good variety of beginner terrain, and a little bit of what you could call expert terrain. It’s not like out west or anything, but it’s pretty steep for the beginners,” said Bill Ringenoldus, Nordic Mountain general manager.
Ringenoldus says with the help of man-made snow, the hill just south of Wild Rose opened to skiers and snowboarders just after Thanksgiving. He says there’s a learning area, where instructors offer new skiers lessons and confidence.
“Makes their first time a good one, versus a bad experience their first time,” he said.
Back on the slopes, Klint and Lisa say they agree.
“It’s just peaceful. Relaxing. I kind of like the adrenaline. That’s always fun. The speed,” said Klint.
“I like adrenaline, but it’s cool when you get to the bottom and you’re like, ‘Yeah, I did it,'” said Lisa.
