OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Longtime law enforcement officer and Winnebago County Sheriff, John Matz, announced his candidacy for Winnebago County Executive.
In a statement released Monday, Matz wrote:
I look forward to continuing my service to the citizens of Winnebago County. My record and commitment to the health and safety of our entire community will be the driving force of my term. Working in county government for the last 34 years I have been transparent and responsive. I will listen to all who have concerns and consider their input as we move forward to improve our quality of life. Working closely with committee’s, the county board, and other stakeholders we will implement long term solutions that positively impact our community.
Matz has been a member of the sheriff’s office for 34 years and the sheriff for the last 14 years.
In addition to his tenure as sheriff, Matz served nearly 30 years in the military. Matz is a veteran, serving with his son in 2009-2010 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Matz retired in 2017, serving as the Command Sergeant Major of 120th Field Artillery Battalion.
Matz is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh and has a graduate certificate from the University of Virginia. He is also a graduate of National Sheriff’s Academy, FBI National Academy, and United States Army Sergeants Major Academy. In addition to these accomplishments John has numerous leadership and practical certifications.
Matz would be running against incumbent Jon Doemel in the April 2025 election.
