GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Yet another Green Bay elementary school has opened an ADA compliant playground.
On Friday, the City of Green Bay and the Green Bay Area Public School District held a ribbon cutting for an inclusive playground at Danz Elementary School.
“During the demolition and construction, the anticipation and excitement grew. Each day, students would ask, ‘When is it going to be done?’ I kept telling them it would be done soon, and when it was completed, it would be well worth the wait,” said Principal Kelly Agen. “The day came and they were bursting with excitement. Students ran out of the commons door and were cheering as they were able to climb, jump and swing on the equipment.”
Although the official grand opening ceremony was just held, students have already been enjoying the playground for a few weeks now. Agen said it already received rave reviews.
“They stop me in the hallway and in classrooms and tell me how much fun the new playground is to play on. They’re very excited for recess and are building wonderful new memories,” Agen added.
The project was funded by the district’s November 2022 referendum, in addition to city ARPA money.
“All means all, and that’s why this playground is our fifth in the district that isADA compliant, which means all students can participate and play together,” said Interim Superintendent Vicki Bayer.
Agen said the new playground is making a difference for Danz students with special needs.
They’re able to move around on the playground and just access the playground in a way that they wouldn’t otherwise, so that’s been really exciting for those students.
School staff even had the opportunity to participate in the design of the new playground, providing input on types of equipment and colors –dolphin blue to match the school’s mascot.
Inclusive playgrounds are being built across the city of Green Bay.
Two weeks ago, Sullivan Elementary School opened its inclusive playgroundand in August, Aldo Leopold Community School cut the ribbon on theirs.Baird Elementary and Jackson Elementary also have ADA compliant playgrounds. One also opened at Bay Beach in June.
