(WNFL/LEARFIELD) – Prior to to the NFL trade deadline on Tuesday, the Green Bay Packers traded defensive lineman Preston Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a 2025 seventh-round pick.
After making the deal, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said that the decision to move Smith was to make room for Arron Mosby and Brenton Cox to move into the rotation.
Gutekunst talked about how Cox and Mosby will help the Packers’ pass rush.
As with other deals made by teams, one has to wonder how the Preston Smith trade will affect the attitude in the lockerroom. Is Gutekunst concerned about losing Preston Smith’s leadership?
Gutekunst then talked about trading a guy who might still have some value, like they did last year with Rasul Douglas.
Mosby has been with the Packers since 2023 after spending 2022 with the Carolina Panthers. He played college football at Fresno State where over 5 seasons he was in on 158 tackles.
Cox is in his second season out of Florida. He made 137 tackles over 4 years (3 at Florida and 1 at Georgia). In 2021, he had 8 1/2 sacks for the Gators.
