(MARQUETTE COMMUNICATIONS/LEARFIELD) MILWAUKEE — Kam Jones scored 32 points and Chase Ross had a career-high 23 as the Marquette University men’s basketball team opened its season with a 102-62 victory over Stony Brook on Monday night at Fiserv Forum.
The Golden Eagles (1-0) ended the first half on a 31-13 run and Jones closed an impressive first 20 minutes with an off balance 3-pointer from the left corner.
Marquette coach Shaka Smart said they corrected themselves in the first half and were good from there.
Smart said that one thing the Golden Eagles do is have a big emphasis on paint touches.
Smart also talked about the outstanding game by Ross.
Marquette carried the momentum into the second half, opening with a 16-11 run into the first timeout. The Golden Eagles kept their foot on the gas, cruising to their first victory of the season.
Jones led for the Golden Eagles with 32 points, his fifth-career game of 30-or-more points. On the defensive end, Marquette tallied 36 rebounds, led by Ross with 8.
Graduate guard Joe Octave led for the Seawolves, posting 12 points and 3 rebounds.
