APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — One of the suspects arrested in connection with the theft of $38,000 from an ATM in Kaukauna was ordered Thursday to stand trial, and pleaded not guilty.
Adonay Dalis-Ramirez, 32, is charged being party to the crime of theft of movable property for the July 5 incident at the Unison Credit Union. He returns to court Oct. 31. No trial date was set.
The others charged in the case are Jesse Duque-Escobar, Johamnel Ortz-Sanchez, Manuel Pina-Gonzalez, Yeniaker Avila-Acevedo, and Andres Escobar-Rodriguez. All have court hearings in the coming weeks.
Kaukauna Police Det. Matthew Kohl testified at the preliminary hearing Thursday that Dalis-Ramirez’s face could be seen on the security video of the thefts.
A defense request to reduce the $100,000 cash bond was denied by Judge Mark McGinnis.
Security video captured images of several people in two vehicles “repeatedly accessing the ATM and manipulating it, then removing a large amount of cash, approximately $38,000.00,” the complaint states. The thieves had staged in a nearby parking lot, then made 48 trips to the ATM. The credit union suspected the thieves had a master key, a small gold key with a rounded base and teeth on both sides. Police later pulled over two vehicles seen on the video, and arrested the six, the criminal complaint states.
All of the suspects had various forms of Venezuelan identification.
Earlier this week, State Rep. Dave Murphy, R-Greenville, raised the possibility the six may be part of the Venezuelan gang, Tren de Aragua, which has been connected to crimes across the country. However, Kaukauna police said they could not confirm the suspects are in that gang. The criminal complaints make no mention of the gang, either.
Dalis-Ramirez’s citizenship and immigration status was not discussed in court Thursday.
The FBI provided this statement on the case:
Per DOJ policy, the FBI does not confirm the existence or status of any investigative work for several reasons; among them the integrity of investigations and privacy rights of all individuals involved. As in any given matter, if charges are filed, they will eventually become a matter of public record.
