DAIRY NEWS – Healthy calves are the foundation of a healthy, productive dairy herd. The 2024 Calf Care Connection® workshop presented by Professional Dairy Producers® (PDP) will focus on the latest research and practices to prevent and manage some of the leading challenges to calf health, including pneumonia, scours and biosecurity risks.
One-day sessions of the workshop will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 15, at Lakeshore Technical College in Cleveland, Wis., and again on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College in Fennimore, Wis. Each day, registration begins at 9:00 a.m. with the program concluding at 3:45 p.m. Simultaneous Spanish translation will be provided for the entire workshop.
“The Calf Care Connection is one of the most valuable investments anyone involved with calf care can make to improve their own knowledge as well as the health and vitality of their calves,” said Laura Raatz, PDP board member and calf care manager of Wagner Farms, Oconto Falls, Wis. “Participants will learn the latest research on biosecurity, pneumonia and scours, as well as practical management strategies they can put to work on their farms right away to benefit animals and their bottom line.”
Calf care managers, calf feeders and other dairy team members will benefit from the combination of classroom training and hands-on experiences offered. Sessions will be presented by calf care experts, including Dr. Don Sockett, DVM, Ms, PhD, diagnostic case and outreach specialist, Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory; Dr. Theresa Ollivett, DVM, PhD, DACVIM, associate professor, School of Veterinary Medicine, UW-Madison; Dr. Melissa Cantor, PhD, assistant professor in precision dairy science, Penn State University; and Dr. Derek Foster, DVM, PhD, DACVIM, associate professor of ruminant medicine, North Carolina College of Veterinary Medicine.
