SHEBOYGAN, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A Sheboygan police officer shot a man who allegedly took another officer’s handgun during an assault.
Officers responded to the 1500 block of N. 13th Street just after 6 p.m. Sunday for a report of a man appearing to be waving a gun around.
When officers arrived, they approached a 23-year-old Sheboygan man who fit the description given by the caller.
While officers were trying to determine who the man was, police say the man suddenly lunged at one of the officers, assaulting the officer and taking the officer’s handgun from the officer’s duty belt.
A second officer, a 29-year-old, two-year veteran of the Sheboygan Police Department, fired at the man with his duty weapon, striking him. The man was taken into custody at the scene and provided medical aid by officers and Sheboygan Fire Department paramedics who responded.
The suspect was taken to a local hospital and was stabilized. He has since been taken by flight for life to a Green Bay-area hospital for treatment and is expected to undergo surgery.
The officer who was assaulted received minor injuries as a result of the suspect’s actions. No other injuries were reported.
The incident has been turned over to the West Bend Police Department for investigation.
Both officers have been placed on administrative leave.
