MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – In the wake of a discussion to close two elementary schools, and a decision to close the central office building, the Manitowoc Public School District has scheduled two ‘school funding informational sessions’ to allow the public to learn more about the budget.
After a report determined the district has $161 million in maintenance needs in the next decade, combined with falling enrollment, superintendent James Feil brought forward a plan to close two elementary schools. He said doing so would save about $30 million. The school board rejected that plan last month, while also voting to sell the central office building.
There was some criticism of the district for not having more community involvement while developing those options.
On Wednesday, the district announced two ‘public information sessions.’ The agenda describes it as “School funding/MPSD budget deep-dive community information session.’ Both will include a presentation and a question & answer session. The agendas are the same for both meetings.
The sessions are Aug. 13 and Aug. 27, both at 4:30 p.m. in the district office board room, 2902 Lindbergh Drive. They will also be livestreamed.
