MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The public will have a chance to weigh in on the Manitowoc school district’s plans to consolidate elementary schools at a meeting Thursday night.
The district says $161 million in maintenance needs over the next ten years were recently identified in an audit. It comes at a time when elementary schools have a capacity for 2,200 students, but only 1,786 are enrolled in the district.
The administration proposed closing two elementary schools and reopening Stangel Learning Center as an elementary school. But at a July 9 meeting, no action was taken, with the board saying it wanted additional public input.
That session has now been scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday at district office, 2902 Lindbergh Drive.
No decisions have been made on which schools would close. However, superintendent James Feil said Jackson, Madison, Franklin and Riverview are being considered.
