MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – For nearly 100 years, Manitowoc has been referred to as “Malt City” and now, the community is further embracing this title.
At an event held Tuesday at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, Manitowoc was declared the Specialty Malt Capital of the World.
Mayor Justin Nickels read the proclamation and State Rep. Paul Tittl (R-25th District) presented a citation from the Wisconsin Legislature recognizing Manitowoc with its new title.
Manitowoc has been known as Malt City for many decades, dating back to the 1930s when a product called Malt City Beer was produced by Riverview Brewing Co. A large malt plant, currently owned and operated by Briess Malt & Ingredients Co., has been operating at its Manitowoc location on Lake Michigan since the late 1800s.
Briess Malt & Ingredients Co. is the #1 supplier of specialty malt to craft brewers in North America, with the largest product line and highest volume. Its products are used by craft breweries and food manufacturers in all 50 states and more than 25 countries around the world.
“Manitowoc is the Specialty Malt Capital of the World, but by extension, it’s really the craft beer capital of the world. I mean, how cool is that?” said CEO and fifth-generation Craig Briess. “That is where most American craft beers begin. Right here in Manitowoc. This is really the heart of craft beer in the U.S. It’s fantastic.”
This special designation of Manitowoc as Specialty Malt Capital of the World belongs to all those who have worked at the company through the years and have remained committed to producing the highest quality specialty malt for the industries we serve.
Briess Malt & Ingredients Co. is headquarted in Chilton. It has production facilities in Manitowoc and Chilton, as well as a grain processing and storage operation in Ralston, Wyoming.
