GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Paper Industry International Hall of Fame gained three new members Wednesday.
Each of the three inductees were recognized during the Wisconsin Paper Council Annual Meeting, held at the Resch Expo in Green Bay.
Since it was founded in 1992, the Paper Industry International Hall of Fame has honored more than 140 paper industry giants from around the world. Appleton’s Atlas Science Center houses the Hall of Fame.
“The three gentleman we are inducting today all played a very big role both in the paper industry in Northeast Wisconsin and worldwide as well,” said Carol Couillard, executive director of the Atlas Science Center.
The paper industry is always evolving and right now it is a huge period of innovation with sustainability, with the technology used in the mills, and I think that highlighting three of the people who played such a big part in it highlights the industry in general, and the jobs and the technology that are really happening here in Northeast Wisconsin.
The three new inductees are:
Christian Schiel: Former chief development engineer for J.M. Voith. He is credited with developing the fabric press, fabric covered press rolls, the technology to manufacture flexible roll sleeves, flexible nip presses, numerous compact press configurations and a series of forming devices based on roll forming technologies. Schiel received the Walter Brecht Award of ZELLCHEMING for outstanding achievements in the pulp and paper industry in 1994.
Harold Miller: Founder of Marathon Engineering. The company employed as many as 225 people before merging with Poyry. He is credited with playing a key role in establishing the Paper Industry International Hall of Fame as well as the Paper Discovery Center, now Atlas Science Center.
Harry Spiegelberg: He pent his entire career at Kimberly-Clark, rising to the position of vice president of technology and patent strategy. He is listed as inventor or co-inventor on multiple patents describing products and processes commercialized by the company.
