GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Affordable housing for homeless veterans is once again on the agenda for Green Bay’s city council Tuesday night.
A vote is also expected to be taken on adding extra early voting locations for the upcoming elections.
The vote on the affordable housing for veterans is for zoning approval for 21 tiny homes, 17 that would be 400 square feet and four 600-square-foot homes.
A vote was held at a meeting last month to explore other locations for the project and to clarify a few legal matters with the county, who is donating the 3.46-acre site.
Veterans 1st of Northeast Wisconsin is the nonprofit behind the veteran Cottage Court community proposal on St. Anthony Drive, near the Green Bay VA Clinic on University Avenue.
Neighbors in that area have voiced heavy opposition to the plans. They’re worried about the credentials of Veterans 1st and a nearby potters field with unmarked graves.
“I don’t think the county actually asked the questions that they needed to ask about their plans and what they want,” said Kathy Jerry, a resident near the proposed site, at the May 21st council meeting. “ You say veterans and people already jump on board and with good reason, but you need to investigate too. You can’t just accept what people say.”
City Council President Brian Johnson says an updated map shows the graves are well outside the site plan.
Last meeting, one of Veterans 1st’s co-founders explained how this project isn’t just about housing.
“We’re just trying to be a servant,” said Kim Nohr, Veterans 1st of NEW co-founder, on May 21st. “We’re trying to get the people where they need to be. Knowing some of the resources that are out there, point them to that and hopefully take them hand by hand into that resource.”
There could be lengthy public comment for this topic again tonight, along with the possibility of adding early in-person absentee voting at Johnsonville Tailgate Village and St. Bernard Church. Those would be in addition to the traditional location of City Hall.
