MILWAUKEE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Wisconsin Democrats are working to build momentum during a key election year.
While Milwaukee will be in the national spotlight for the Republican National Convention next month, the city’s Potawatomi Casino Hotel was the backdrop for the state Democratic convention over the weekend.
From the state Legislature, all the way to U.S Congress and Senate, state Democrats have their eyes set on November.
“The people in Wisconsin are expecting us to do better. They’re expecting us to work together, identify problems, find what we agree on and take steps towards fixing that,” said Kristin Alfheim, Democratic candidate for the 18th Wisconsin Senate District race.
“We are ready. We’ve got democrats running in every single assembly seat, every single senate seat and of course, every single congressional seat which went unchallenged in the last cycle. We are ready to get good work done for the people of Northeast Wisconsin,” said Kristin Lyerly, democratic candidate for Wisconsin’s 8th Congressional District.
With an empty 8th Congressional District that must be filled, democrats see an opportunity with a district that’s historically been held by a Republican.
Lyerly is the lone Democrat, while State Sen. Andre Jacque, former State Sen. Roger Roth, and Tony Wied vie for the seat for Republicans.
Over in the U.S. Senate, the party is continuing to throw its support behind Sen. Tammy Baldwin, who’s being challenged by Republican Eric Hovde.
“She is one of the best senators that, you know, we have in Washington. So she’s going to be very difficult to beat,” said Brown Co. Democratic Party Chair Christy Welch.
State Republicans held their convention in Appleton last month.
