APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Area musicians are taking to the streets of Appleton to showcase their talents for a good cause.
On Monday, the 12th annual Street Music Week kicked off in downtown Appleton. Hosted by Heid Music, the event raises funds for Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, the state’s largest food bank.
Each day this week from noon to 1 p.m., musicians will be performing on the sidewalks along both sides of College Avenue. There will be additional performances during Downtown Appleton, Inc.’s Farm Market on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Acts of all ages and skill levels are invited to take part in Street Music Week.
“It’s everything from little ones to experienced musicians. We get everybody to come out because it’s really everybody’s issue,” said Patti Habeck, president and CEO of Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin.
Signing up in advance is encouraged, but not required. All you have to do is get an orange Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin bucket from Heid Music (308 E. College Avenue) and pick a spot along College Avenue to perform for donations.
“Music and basic needs are one in the same and they go together, so this is a natural synergy,” Habeck said. “Using music to raise money to help purchase food for people who are experiencing food insecurity is a natural thing.”
Since its inception 11 years ago, Street Music Week has raised more than $60,000 for Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin. Organizers hope to raise $10,000 during this year’s event.
Habeck said Feeding America is able to make four meals out of every dollar that is donated.
