NE WISCONSIN (WTAQ-WLUK) – Northeast Wisconsin political figures and party leaders are reacting to former President Donald Trump’s conviction in a Manhattan criminal trial over hush money.
From his supporters…
“Shameful day for the country,” Brown County Republican Chair Doug Reich said. “This is an outrageous abuse of the legal system to drag President Trump through the courts on a trivial charge like this. I think it’s attack on the American voter, it’s an attack on democracy.”
To his opponents…
“In this country we’re all accountable to the same set of laws and President Trump was tried by a jury of peers just as anyone would be in the American system of justice,” Wisconsin Democratic Chair Ben Wikler said.
As is the case throughout the country, the decision has elicited mixed reactions from Wisconsinites.
“Fuel, not only outrage, it’s going to unite the Republican base with independents who I think see through this for what it is and these just unending witch hunts,” Reich said.
Reich believes it will rally voters to empathize with Trump. On the state level, Wikler says it further cements Joe Biden as the better candidate.
“Because he’s focused on actually helping other people and being a kind and decent person and on protecting people’s freedoms,” Wikler said. “With President Trump it is these dark vows of retribution and revenge against his enemies and whose on the enemies list keeps expanding. That is not who you want to be the leader of the free world.”
Trump himself will weigh in during a news conference today (Friday).
