FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Fermin Lopez-Mendoza pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges he tried to kill his wife.
A jury trial is scheduled for Nov. 18 on four counts, including attempted first-degree intentional homicide, for the March 22 incident, court records show.
According to the criminal complaint, officers were dispatched to a home on County Road K for a report of a woman who had been stabbed.
When police arrived, a witness said Lopez-Mendoza had stabbed the victim with a knife after the couple was having an argument about Lopez-Mendoza moving out.
After the stabbing, the witness said Lopez-Mendoza got into a vehicle and drove off. As Lopez-Mendoz drove off, the witness threw a hammer at the vehicle, striking the back window, causing it to shatter.
The woman was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. She also suffered internal bleeding as her liver was punctured from one of the stab wounds, the complaint states.
Authorities were able to track Lopez-Mendoza to a residence in Ozaukee County where he was arrested. His vehicle was located in rural Calumet County and seized as evidence.
Federal Homeland Security later confirmed to the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office that Lopez-Mendoza is illegally in the United States.
