MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The city of Marinette voted unanimously Monday to continue moving forward with plans to acquire the library and administrative building on the UW-Green Bay Marinette campus.
With the acquisition of the buildings, the city would also receive $2 million in state funding for redevelopment of the buildings, which are owned by Marinette County.
Monday’s action comes as the county considers what to do with the property and existing buildings. Marinette Mayor Steve Genisot offered some insight:
Our interest is we’ve got an aging building, we’ve got a need for extra space for the police department, so if we can move some city services there, for City Hall, maybe the senior center, maybe police department — we’ll have to determine that. So that’s what our interest is possibly for reuse of those.
UW-Green Bay has maintained it wants to prioritize the Herbert L. Williams Theatre.
Mayor Genisot previously said the city is interested in acquiring Runnoe Park, which is part of the campus. However, the county is hesitant right now on turning over just portions of the entire property.
“Our concern was that you, like anything else, you have some very desirable real estate and very desirable portions of it, and some that is less than desirable, so maybe it all should be transferred as one,” County Board Chair John Guarisco said.
Right now, UW-Green Bay plans on keeping classrooms with streaming capabilities active for courses taught at Marinette come the 2024 fall semester.
