MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — Criminals are targeting people looking for a new job, and those on unemployment.
Wisconsin consumer protection director Michelle Reinen says a new scam offers to set up a home office for you, using a check the scammers send.
“You don’t get any goods that you’ve purchased. The check they sent you ends up being fake and you’ve just handed over your own money to the scammer thinking you’ve been hired for employment and there’s nothing there for you.”
Reinen says you should never have to pay someone to start working.
It’s also important to do your research before taking up an offer, like making sure there are real, physical locations for the companies you’re applying for by doing a google maps search.
