SUAMICO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The NEW Zoo is mourning the loss of one of its otters.
Minnie, a 15-year-old North American river otter, was euthanized after battling a chronic kidney and bladder disease, the zoo says.
The zoo said last spring, Minnie underwent a surgery that helped alleviate many of her symptoms and she bounced back.
Then recently she started showing decline and after a veterinary exam, ultrasound and x-ray images showed her condition had worsened significantly. Because medications were no longer providing her comfort, staff make the difficult decision to humanely euthanize her.
When Minnie arrived at the zoo in 2021, she came with her long-time companion Louie. The NEW Zoo says it is working with the North American River Otter Species Survival Plan to find him a new companion.
During this period of adjustment, the NEW Zoo does not expect its Otter Feeding Experiences to be available for the early summer but will keep the public updated.
